Tutorial Title: How to create an inset
Program: PSP 5+
Step 1: Open an image and increase the colors to 16 million. If you do not have an image to use, right click on the image below and save it to your hard drive and open it in PSP (be sure to increase the colors in this image because it's a compressed gif).
Step 2: Create a new layer. Name it original shape. Make the foreground color black. Now draw out a shape or something. For this tutorial I drew an X. Now set the layer blend mode to soft light.
Step 3: Duplicate the "original shape" layer, and rename it to "shape invert". On the duplicate layer, invert the colors. The shape you drew should dissapear now. Press Ctrl+A to select all. select the selection tool and click anywhere inside the image to select the all the pixels from the shape you created earlier. Press Ctrl+the down arrow to move the slection down one pixel. Now you should have an inset.
Step 4: In the layer palette, select the "original shape" layer and Duplicate it. Move the layer named "Copy of original shape" and move it to the top of all the layers. Decrease the opcity of this layer to 50%. Press Ctrl+A, select the selection tool and click inside the image, and press ctrl+the up arrow to move the selection up one pixel.
Step 5: Deselect everything and you are finished. Your final image should look something like the image below.
