Tutorial Title: How add scanlines to photos
Program: PS 6
Step 1: Open the photgraph that you want to use for this tutorial. I am using a photograph of a cellphone for this. The photo should also have a good contrast and lots of colors.

Step 2: Create a new document with the dimensions of 6 pixels by 6 pixels. Make a new layer and with black as your foreground color draw two lines like shown below. Hide your background layer. Go back to layer 1 and press Command+A (CTRL+A).

Step 3: In your menu bar, click EDIT and go down and click on DEFINE PATTERN. You will then get a popup similar to the one below. On the left you will see a preview of what your pattern will look like. Give it a name such as "scanlines" so that it is easy for you to find it later. Click OK to save your pattern.

Step 4: You can close the document window with the scanlines now, your pattern is saved to your hard drive. Switch over to the document containing your photograph.Go to your Tools Palette and select the paint bucket tool (it is under the Gradient tool if you can't find it) (1). Now go to your Options Palette and select PATTERN from the drop down menu next to Fill (2).From the drop down menu find your newly created pattern (mine was called scanline as I named it before) from the drop down menu next to Pattern (3).
Step 4: Create a new layer and name it scanlines. Fill this new layer by clicking in your canvas with the paint bucket tool. You will now see the pattern you created earlier repeated over and over forming the scanlines. To enhance the look of the scanlines you might want to play around with the opacities and layer modes. My final image below has the scanlines set to a layer mode of Soft Light with opacity at 90%.
